FRESNO, Calif. - Lauren Albertson pounded kill after kill to help fuel Fresno State's 3-1 win over San Jose State and clinching victory for a berth in the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
"This was an important win for us as a team," said Lauren Albertson, who landed a career-high 15 kills. "Just knowing that we can beat a team like that shows we are capable of beating anyone when we play our game."
Albertson's development and performance led a Fresno State arsenal that swung for an impressive .321 hitting percentage - including a .516 in the closing set.
"Tonight was the first time Lauren really dominated offensively," fourth-year head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said. "This type of solid and consistent play will help our chances at the WAC Tournament."
After SJSU won the opening set 25-20, the Bulldogs regrouped and powered through the final three sets 25-22, 25-21 and a resounding 25-13 to finish off the season sweep of the Spartans, who dropped to 10-15 overall and 5-7 against WAC opponents.
Korrin Wild, a sophomore outside hitter for the `Dogs chipped in her fifth double-double this year (15 kills/12 digs) and senior Brianna Clarke added 11 kills.
"I am really excited that we have beaten a couple of good teams twice this year," Netherby-Sewell said of her team, who also beat Nevada twice in conference play. "We are starting to believe a little and these are going to be a fun next few weeks."
Fresno State (11-12, 5-5 WAC) heads out on its final regular season road trip as a member of the WAC when the Bulldogs visit New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech this week. The Nov. 3 match in Las Cruces with the Aggies will be shown on www.espn3.com and air on some satellite packages on Altitude.
