FRESNO, Calif. - With day one of the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship Meet consisting of just two events, the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay, the Dogs glided through the water to break a Fresno State record in one race and set a season and career-best in the other.
"We had a good first night," said an excited head coach Jeanne Fleck. "There were just two relays tonight and we broke the 200-yard medley relay school record. It's awesome and we are very excited."
The 200-yard medley relay was the first event and the team of Heidi Gjoen, Britney Vogel, Steph Hatayama and Dani Yoho worked together to clock a record-setting time of 1:42.25.
They broke the former school record from the 1998-99 season of 1:45.39 by more than three seconds, breaking it tonight over 10 years later.
The second relay of the night was the 800-yard freestyle. Veteran Heidi Gjoen and Dani Yoho teamed up with freshmen Brooke Fuller and Michelle Dockendorf to record a 7:34.77 time. They topped their previous career and season-best time by more than five seconds and were just .62 off the Fresno State record.
The Dogs placed 6th in both events and are currently ranked 6th overall in the WAC Championship Meet.
The Dogs begin competition tomorrow morning with preliminaries at 9 a.m. PT. Day two will consist of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and the 1-meter dive. Finals for all these events will begin at 4:30 p.m. PT./
