Dogs Rock Doubles but Fall to SMC

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State welcomed No. 40 Saint Mary's to the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Thursday, with the Gaels picking up a 5-2 victory.
Bulldogs started the day off strong by earning the doubles point.
Laura Pola and Marianne Jodoin pulled off a tremendous win defeating the 87th ranked doubles team Catherine Isip and Alex Poorta, 8-7.
Adding another victory to their doubles resume Melissa McQueen and Bianca Modoc competed on court two against Alita Fisher and Jenny Jullien, 8-4.
Sophomore Olga Kirpicheva earned the only singles point for the Dogs. She battled freshman, Laurie Gingras with close games in each set but fought her way to victory, 7-6, 7-6.
The Gaels had singles victories on courts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
The victory for the Gaels brings their record to 2-1 this spring and is now 2-8 all-time against the Bulldogs.
"I'm very pleased with our match level today," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "Saint Mary's is a good team with a lot of experience. It was disappointing to not get the win, but it was a very positive match for us."
The Bulldogs have a competitive filled weekend taking on No. 49 University of Arizona on Friday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. and Nevada on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Nevada and Arizona will compete against each other on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
