FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State pitcher Greg Gonzalez was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 7-13. It is the second time in the 2011 season the senior has earned the weekly honor.
Gonzalez, from San Bruno, Calif. (Skyline CC), picked up a 1-0 shutout victory at Nebraska on Saturday. Gonzalez struck out a career-high 12 batters as Fresno State won its third game against a ranked opponent. Gonzalez did not give up a walk in 7.0 innings of work.
He has now pitched 14 consecutive scoreless innings. Gonzalez sat the Huskers batters down in order in the second and seventh innings. He had a no-hitter through five innings and two-thirds innings, but it was broken up with a single to left field. He allowed only two hits in his fourth start of the season.
Gonzalez was also named College Baseball Insider's West Regional Pitcher of the Week.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs return home on March 17 hosting Washington State for a four-game series. March 17 begins a 13 game home stand where the Dogs face Washington State, Ohio State, San Diego and San Francisco before opening Western Athletic Conference play.
