Dogs See Silver Lining in Loss To Navy

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's lacrosse team fell to Navy 22-6 on Tuesday afternoon, but even in defeat interim co-head coaches Carlee Buck and Lindsay Gotham were able to pick out plenty of bright spots.
The two liked how the Bulldogs controlled the ball on offense, and they were pleased with their ability to maintain their composure even as the Midshipmen began to take over the game.
"Offensively, we were able to possess the ball, and we executed some of our plays," Buck said. "They never looked defeated, regardless of what the scoreboard said."
Navy (8-1), the defending Patriot League champions, came to Fresno with a resume worthy of its reputation. Not only do the Midshipmen boast the winningest coach in the game (Cindy Timchal), but they also have one of the best freshmen in the country in attacker Aimee Gennaro.
Navy wasted little time knocking Fresno State (0-7) on its heels and finding the back of the net nearly three minutes into the game. Still, Margaret Wolford evened things up at 1-1 with a goal of her own with 25:40 to play.
Then it was all Midshipmen. Navy went on a 12-1 run and breezed into halftime leading 13-2. For the game, Navy out-shot Fresno State 36-16, and Katrina Nietsch and Molly Hamilton scored four goals apiece. Gennaro added three goals, as did Kathy Young, Jasmine DePompeo and Danielle Vivonetto.
Wolford paced the Bulldogs with two goals, while Amanda Cross, Rachel Minarovich, Lauren Natale and Paula Badali scored one each.
"Navy's a really good team, and we played with them," Gotham said. "The score doesn't depict what we accomplished. They're a good team, and they made us better."
"We Are Your Team!"-- Fresno State now hits the road for three consecutive games. The Bulldogs will return to Bulldog Stadium for their Alumni Game on April 2.
