FRESNO, Calif. - After being shackled to the sidelines with a leg injury for nearly six weeks, freshman midfielder Kara Concheck simply wanted to find a way to contribute.
That opportunity came Monday morning, and Concheck took full advantage, scoring a career-high three goals in the Bulldogs' 18-7 loss to Denver at Bulldog Stadium.
"I was just motivated to get back in," Concheck said. "With the time I get, I was pumped up and determined to get the ball in the back of the net."
Concheck did so with less than one minute remaining in the first half. She charged past the Pioneers' defense and fired a shot into the net to cut Denver's halftime lead to 10-3. Concheck also scored two more goals in the second half, but by the time those came, the Pioneers were too far out in front.
Denver (5-10, 3-1 MPSF) out-shot Fresno State 20-5 in the first half alone (37-12 for the game). Kara Secora paced the Pioneers with three goals and seven assists.
Heather Jack, Krisdina Gehring, Margaret Wolford and Paula Badali scored for the Bulldogs (0-12, 0-6 MPSF). Goalies Lisa Barnaba and Katie Wilbur split time in the nets and combined for 16 saves.
"We were even in draw controls in the first half, but we only had five shots compared to their 20," Fresno State interim head coach Carlee Buck said. "Unforced errors and the turnovers have continued to plague our season."
Concheck agreed.
"We had 16 turnovers in the first half," she said. "That's our biggest thing. We have so much talent, but we struggle with turnovers and taking care of the ball."
Fresno State has one more chance to rectify that. Next week, the Bulldogs will hit the road for their final road trip of the season, traveling to Howard on April 20 and then Duquesne on April 23.
"We Are Your Team!" -- Kara Concheck scored three goals in Fresno State's final home game of the 2011 season.
