Dogs Stay on Top in the WAC

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 75 Fresno State women's tennis team (7-12, 4-0 WAC) continued Western Athletic Conference domination this afternoon defeating the Idaho Vandals, 7-0 at the Wathen Tennis Center. Fresno State started off strong earning the doubles point and continued with victories on courts one, two and five. The Dogs advanced their conference record to 4-0 and still remain the only undefeated team in the WAC.
The Bulldogs doubles team swung to domination early in the day, sweeping the Vandals in doubles and earning the point.
Abby Hayley and Bianca Modoc upped their resume by one after defeating Idaho's Natalie Kirch and Barbara Maciocha, 8-2. On court one Laura Pola and Marianne Jodoin topped Idaho's number one doubles team, Victoria Lozano and Lauren Simpson, 8-4 and clinched the doubles point. Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva came from behind and showed up Idaho's Molly Knox and Yvette Ly on court two, 8-7 (7-1).
In singles, the Dogs were just as successful earning victories on all courts. Pola started it off for Fresno State earning a straight-set victory over Simpson on court two, 6-2, 6-1. Jodoin finished shortly after earning another straight-set victory for the Dogs, 6-1, 6-3.
Kirpicheva clinched the match for Fresno State on court five as she prevailed over Idaho's Knox, sweeping her in the first set and only giving up three in the second set, 6-0, 6-3.
McQueen advanced the Dogs score to 5-0 overpowering the Vandal's Silvia Irimescu on court three, 6-3, 6-1. On court four, Modoc fell in the first set to Macoicha but rallied back and pushed to a tiebreaker and came out on top, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3). Hayley earned the Bulldogs their final point in the day, 7-0 triumphing over Lozano, 6-4, 6-3 on court six.
The Bulldogs continue conference play today at the Wathen Tennis Center at 2 p.m. when they take on San Jose State.
