Bulldogs Off to WAC Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 72 Fresno State is one step closer to bringing the Western Athletic Conference title back home. Fresno State defeated Nevada, 4-3. The Bulldogs battled to last point against Nevada at Boise, Idaho Friday afternoon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The Dogs obtained an early lead earning the doubles point and fought on courts one, three and six to clinch the match from the Wolf Pack.
The match came down to the final point, as the Bulldogs proved to be the stronger team and came out on top.
In doubles, Marianne Jodoin and Laura Pola along with Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva clinched the doubles point for the Dogs, putting them ahead 1-0.
Recently awarded WAC Freshman and Player of the Year, in a straight set victory, No. 55 Jodoin defeated Nevada's top-seeded player Florence de Vrye, 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore McQueen eanred the Dogs point No. 3 in the day after conquering Lais Ogata on court three, 6-1, 6-1.
Neveda picked up victories on courts two, four and five, tying the match up 3-3.
Coming down to the final match on court six, Abby Hayley fell in her first set, 1-6 but with an outstanding and stellar performance rallied back in the second set, 6-3 and kept her momentum strong in the third set. Hayley pulled ahead and clinched the match, 6-4 giving the Dogs their victory.
"It was a very tough win against an excellent Nevada team," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "I am proud of our team reaching another WAC final. It was great seeing Abby Hayley fighting back and clinching the match for us. We are looking forward to playing hard tomorrow."
Fresno State will compete in the final round against the winner of the fifth-seeded New Mexico State and the first-seeded Boise State.
