FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golfer Bhavik Patel has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week for March 28-April 3.
"I am very excited to hear Bhavik is WAC Golfer of the Week again," head coach Mike Watney said. "He certainly deserves it after finishing where he did last week. It was another great performance."
Patel, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield HS), matched his best finish of the year by tying for third place at the OGIO Santa Barbara Invite, March 28-29. Bhavik shot a 3-under par 213 (71-72-70) finishing just one stroke behind the leaders.
Patel carded a tournament high 14 birdies over the three rounds after coming into the week leading the nation in birdies with 114. His finish helped the Bulldogs place third in the 16-team field, matching their best performance of the year.
With one regular season tournament left on the schedule, Patel's 71.56 season scoring average would rank him fourth all-time in Fresno State men's golf history, just .02 ahead of his average last season. Former Bulldog and current PGA star Nick Watney holds the top three spots in program history.
Last week was Patel's sixth top five finish out of 11 tournaments this season. He still leads the nation in birdies with 128.
It is the fifth time in his career that Patel has won a WAC golfer of the week or month award.
"We Are Your Team!" Fresno State men's golf returns to action April 15-16 at the PING Cougar Classic held at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.
