FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team finished the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-0 loss to New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Diamond.
"It's tough to lose," head coach Margie Wright said. "We hit the ball hard, but New Mexico State has been on a great run. We have to look forward to the future."
The future will become clearer on Sunday night when the Bulldogs discover if they will extend their NCAA record to 30 straight national postseason tournament appearances.
ESPNU will broadcast the annual NCAA Softball Tournament Selection Show at 7 p.m. Pacific.
Fresno State (34-17) owns a resume that includes six top 25 wins, a 5-1 record against 2010 Women's College World Series participants and a series of strong showings against the nation's top competition.
New Mexico State (42-15) jumped ahead early with a run in the first, three in the third and a run in the fifth to secure the WAC's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
The Dogs' Haley Gilleland, Courtney Moore and Mackenzie Oakes were selected to the All-Tournament team.
"I'm proud of my team and we worked hard all season," Oakes said.
