LOS ANGELES - A good thing came to an end early for the Fresno State baseball team. The Bulldogs hopes of a trip to Omaha ended after a 3-1 loss to UCLA Saturday afternoon.
The Dogs won the 2011 WAC title after finishing the conference season 17-7 and won the WAC Tournament in three games. The Bulldogs have won a share of the conference crown the past six seasons.
UCLA jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning after scoring a run on a single to shallow left from Cody Keefer. The Bulldogs defended a bunt play perfectly the same inning that held the Bruins to one run. Senior infielder Jordan Ribera fielded a bunt and threw the UCLA runner out at home saving a run.
Junior Brennan Gowens was the first Bulldog to record a hit off National Player of the Year and UCLA ace Trevor Bauer. The All-WAC selection hit a double off the right center wall in the third inning, but was stranded at third base.
Junior Josh Poytress gave up two runs in his 10th start of the season. He hurled three scoreless innings in a total of five innings pitched. Poytress punched out three UCLA batters bringing his season total to 56 strikeouts. He allowed only one walk and has allowed 17 walks in 18 appearances.
The Bruins scored another run in the bottom of the fourth inning increasing their lead 2-0. UCLA tallied a total of 11 hits against the Dogs.
Junior Pat Hutcheson led off the sixth inning with a double that dribbled down the third baseline into left field for the Dogs second hit of the game. Senior Danny Muno brings Hutcheson home with a single up the middle and the Bulldogs trail 2-1.
Junior Charlie Robertson and Taylor Garrison pitched well out of the bullpen collectively striking out three batters and allowing only one run. The two limited UCLA to three hits in three innings of relief.
UCLA added a run in the seventh inning and won the game by a final score of 3-1.
