FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Aquatics Center made a huge leap towards completion with the plastering and filling of the competition pool Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, over 65 tons of plastering lined the pool and later in the day, 962,432 gallons of water was pumped in.
"It's so exciting for the future of this program. We have been waiting for this for a long time and it's now coming to board," Fresno State head swimming and diving coach Jeanne Fleck said. "It's just a great facility and it's going to help recruiting and the kids that are here already. They won't have to miss class to go to practice. We are just really excited where we're going."
Construction began in 2010 and work should be completed to be used for fall classes and by the Bulldog swimming and diving team for 2011-12 competition.
"The timing couldn't be better. Now everyone will get to get into the pool together right when school starts," Fleck said.
The competition pool has 8 lanes for long-course and 19 lanes for short-course swimming, with a movable bulkhead to allow various configurations.
The new Aquatics Center provides the potential to expand aquatics class offerings so more students can learn about aquatics theory and enjoy the program's health and fitness related benefits.
The design of the pool allows for swimmers and divers to train at the same location and same time for short and long-course training.
