FRESNO, Calif. - After the completion of her sophomore year, Margaret Wolford started off her summer vacation with a trip to Europe and helped lead her team to a second-place finish in the Berlin Open Lacrosse Tournament from June 17-19.
USA Athletes International - Wolford's team - battled to the championship game before losing 11-10 to the Global Players, a team of Europeans and Americans, for the runner-up finish.
"The experience was so awesome," Wolford remarked. "I got to meet not only the girls from my team, but people from teams that were from all over the world."
Wolford was picked to play for USA Athletes International and prior to her departure for the incredible opportunity, she beamed when thinking of her upcoming journey.
"I am going to be playing with girls from all over the country, most are from the east coast and most of the girls on the team play for DII and DIII schools," Wolford said before her journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
This trip not only marked Wolford's first time participating in an international competition, it also was the first time she ever traveled overseas. Wolford was excited to compete with different girls, but also thrilled to explore a place she had never been.
"I am looking forward to playing with some great players from the collegiate level and I am so excited to see a part of the world I never thought I would get to see," Wolford said.
After the Berlin Open Lacrosse Tournament, Wolford and her teammates traveled to Prague for a more relaxed tourist experience.
"I was able to see some different famous sites while overseas such as the Wall Memorial, the Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and the Terezin Memorial," Wolford said.
Not knowing the language or culture of the countries she visited, Wolford's excitement exceeded her nerves and she was truly grateful for the opportunity.
Wolford and her team were awarded the second place trophy during the June 19 medal ceremony.
Overall, Wolford's once-in-a -lifetime experience was something she will cherish forever.
"I will keep this experience with me for the rest of my life and it made me realize how important sport is because it can bring so many different people together," Wolford said.
