FRESNO, Calif. - Mallori Gibson has joined the Fresno State Bulldog volleyball program as an assistant coach, head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell announced today.
"Mallori was highly recommended by those that coached her and worked with her," Netherby-Sewell said. "She's well-respected and eager to continue her collegiate coaching career. Everyone I talked to about her said she's the most trustworthy, hardworking person they know."
Gibson, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., recently played professionally in Greece and won a Greek Cup Gold Medal for Olympiacos Sport Club. She started her playing career at the University of Colorado before transferring to University of the Pacific, where she was a first-team All-Big West Conference outside hitter.
Gibson became a volunteer-assistant coach at Pacific for a short time while she earned her Masters of Arts in Sports Sciences.
"On the court, she has a reputation as a fierce competitor with a scary arm," Netherby-Sewell said. "Off the court, she has a reputation as a respectful leader and loyal assistant. She's shown tremendous drive to gain the experience it takes to assist and coach at this level. I'm ready to utilize that drive to help augment our efforts in becoming an elite program not just in the classroom, but on the volleyball court."
While starring as an upperclassman at Pacific, Gibson quickly established herself as the Tigers' top offensive threat and one of the most well rounded players on the court. She was also an efficient and powerful kill leader for the Buffaloes during her two seasons at Colorado.
Gibson graduated as a prep standout from Foothill High School. As one of PrepVolleyball.com's Top 250 in the nation, she earned Kern County Player of the Year honors after leading the county in kills, digs and aces all four years in high school and setting the school's all-time kill record. Gibson also was a four-time all-South East Yosemite League selection in volleyball and basketball. Additionally, she won six league titles in track and field - three times in the shot put, twice in the long jump and once in the pole vault.
Gibson is a past recipient of the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award and the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Award while garnering CIF Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
