FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team closed out its 2011 preseason schedule at home early Saturday afternoon, dropping an exhibition game against the California Golden Bears 3-1. Junior Callie Hancock punched in the `Dogs lone goal that was double assisted by senior Laura Dodd and freshman MacKenzie Cochrane.
The two teams anticipated playing through a full regulation and two overtimes. Temperatures reached 99 degrees as the foes battled for 110 minutes of great soccer.
Cal's Betsy Hassett opened scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal. Grace Leer followed with an unassisted goal of her own to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead heading into the first break. Hancock's goal came in the 59th minute of play to pull Fresno State within one.
The score would stand at 2-1 through the remainder of the second half and nearly both overtimes before Betsy Hassett, with three seconds remaining in the final session, chipped in the last goal over a charging Katie DeVault into an open net.
DeVault finished with a team high three saves. Hancock led the offense with one goal and four shots, all on goal. Among those proving their endurance today was senior Kendall VanDine, who was the only student-athlete to compete for the full 110 minutes.
The Bulldogs move on to their season opener against Texas A&M on Aug. 19 at 4:30 p.m. in Texas. Fans can track the action by going to gobulldogs.com.
