12 DAYS UNTIL THE BULLDOGS' FIRST SERVE OF 2011
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team took charge in their first week of fall camp that was highlighted by impressive performances in their annual Bjerring Tournament and a trip to Wonder Valley Ranch for teambuilding and leadership activities.
Sophomore Korrin Wild (Sanger, Calif.) won the Bjerring Tournament - a series of doubles competitions where every member of the team players each of their teammates once.
"Korrin was simply impressive - she led, followed when necessary, and every skill was there," fourth-year head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said.
Juniors Marissa Brand and Cecilia Agraz finished second and third, respectively,
"Korrin, Marissa and Cecilia worked harder than anyone this summer and played the most volleyball," Netherby-Sewell said. "Their dominant scores proved the point that that kind of preseason work pays off."
Newcomers Jaimee-Lee Morrow and Barbara Alcantara also impressed their head coach with strong showings.
"Jaimee and Barbara both finished in the positive of our newcomers," Netherby-Sewell said. "It's a plus/minus scoring system, so anyone finishing in the positive is a job well done. It tests their overall skills and ability to play well with each teammate, against each teammate - a great early test for us."
The Bjerring Tournament serves as an assessment of the impact of offseason preparation.
The game is set up on a half court with an antenna in the middle of the net marking the smaller court boundaries. The team that wins the game receives positive points depending on how many points they win by. The individual game points are tallied up at the end to determine the winner.
In order to be successful, an individual must be a well-rounded athlete that can pass, set, serve, attack and defend efficiently in every game. They also need to exemplify good teammate skills by constantly communicating and supporting their teammates.
To close the week, the team traveled to Wonder Valley Ranch for situational leadership training and teambuilding scenarios with a focus on bonding, communication, trust and teamwork.
The Bulldogs are fired up for their final week of fall camp before starting classes on Aug. 22 and begin their final countdown to the start of the 2011 season.
