FRESNO, Calif. - The resilience of the Fresno State volleyball team fended off CSU Bakersfield 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23 and 27-25) on Thursday night during the `Dogs only home match in September.
"We knew this was going to be a battle as we had just a couple days to get our pieces together and regroup after last weekend," head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said.
Bulldog sophomore Korrin Wild transitioned to the outside after starting the previous 11 matches at libero and delivered a season-high 13 kills.
Senior middle blocker Brianna Clarke also landed 13 kills in the four-set victory while junior setter Barbara Alcantara tossed up a season-high 51 assists.
Freshman Christina Lee made her first career start at libero and helped solidify the Bulldogs' back row.
"This was the first time Christina has ever played libero and she did pretty well," Netherby-Sewell said.
Fresno State (5-7) snapped a three-match losing streak by rallying to win the final three sets against CSU Bakersfield (3-11).
The `Dogs start Western Athletic Conference play Saturday at Nevada for the first of a three-match road trip that continues next Thursday at San Jose State and Oct. 1 at Hawai'i.
"We are excited to start WAC play and open against Nevada," Netherby-Sewell, who also played collegiately for the Wolf Pack, added.
Nevada (2-9) is guided by Ruth Lawanson, the Pack's first-year head coach and a former standout Fresno State student-athlete - who represented the Bulldogs in the Olympics.
