FRESNO, Calif. - Even though the conditions were difficult at the Rose City Collegiate, the women's golf team was able to do something Monday the men were not able to -- play two rounds of golf. Despite the weather, the Bulldogs put together two solid rounds and will head into the final day of competition in second place out of 14 teams.
The `Dogs (607, +31) shot an opening round 302 and followed it up with a 305 in a windy second round at the 6,080-yard, par-72 Langdon Farms Golf Club. They are only 10 shots behind the leader, Long Beach State (298-299--597, +21)."The team played solid today - I am very proud of them," interim head coach Alexis Edwards said. "The day started off in the rain and the second round was pretty windy, but despite the changing weather, our players remained tough. When those conditions come up, it is easy to focus more on the weather instead of golf, but we stayed mentally in it the whole day."
The `Dogs were led by Hillary Billingsley and Madchen Ly who are both tied for third at 6-over par.
Billingsley, a sophomore from Lemoore, Calif., played consistent golf, shooting 3-over, 75 both rounds.
After carding an opening round 77, Ly, a freshman from Clovis, Calif., ended the day with a 1-over, 73, the second-lowest score of the round.
Senior Louisa Lies (75-78--153) sits in a tie for 16th at 9-over while sophomores Christine Uhalde (77-79--156, +12) and Krysta Clark (75-82--157, +13) are in a tie for 25th and 27th, respectively. Clark led the Bulldogs with five birdies.
Rochelle Chan of Long Beach State shot an impressive 66 to open the tournament and sits in first at 2-under, while Seattle's Caitlin McCleary holds the second spot at 3-over.
The Bulldogs will return to action Tuesday to compete in the final round of the Rose City Collegiate with tee times starting at 8 a.m. PT.
"The team is ready and eager to play the final round tomorrow," Edwards concluded. "Of course our team is looking to improve in our standings, but if we stay focused and play our game it will be a good showing for the Bulldogs."
