FRESNO, Calif. - With the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational being shortened to 18-holes since the two rounds Monday were canceled due to rain, the Fresno State men's golf team took advantage of the shortened tournament and placed in a tie for second in their first action of the season.
"They started out slow but were able to claw and scratch their way back," head coach Mike Watney said. "I am very happy with our finish."The `Dogs fired an 11-over, 299 on the 7124-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
The field was cut down to six teams -- Washington, Washington State, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, Fresno State and Santa Clara -- since ten teams withdrew due to the cancellation.
Playing in his first tournament as a Bulldog, Rufie Fessler led Fresno State with a 1-over, 73 to finish tied for sixth place. Fessler, a transfer from Bakersfield College, shot even-par on the front nine and sunk two birdies, both on par-5 holes.
Bhavik Patel, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., also placed in the top 10 with a tie for eighth at 2-over, 74. Patel carded the only eagle of the tournament, knocking it in on the 513-yard, par-5 14th.
Sophomore returner Nate Jessup (75, +3) recorded three birdies, the most on the team, to place in a tie for 13th. Jack Mulroy (77, +5) and Brian Sunker (80, +8) ended in ties for 19th and 36th, respectively.
Washington, the tournament's host, took home the team title with a 5-over, 293 and Washington State joined the `Dogs at 11-over to tie them for second.
Chris Williams of Washington captured the individual title with a 3-under, 69 performance. Pepperdine's Josh Anderson and Washington State's Jarrett Foote and Trent Sanders all tied for second at 1-under, 71.
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 3-4 at the Wolf Pack Classic in Stateline, Nev.
"We are glad our next tournament is in a week," Watney concluded. "With only one round under our belts, we are ready to go again."
