`Dogs, Ly Place Second at Rose City

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Madchen Ly, playing in only her second collegiate tournament, and the Bulldogs as a team both used a strong performance on the back nine to finish in second place.
"They played amazingly well on the back nine," interim head coach Alexis Edwards said. "It was a never ending battle with the weather, but they toughed it out and never let their lead go."Fresno State (302-305-303--910, +46) shot a final round 303 to hold off San Francisco's push and remain in second out of 14 teams. The `Dogs finished first in par-5 scoring at 1-over, five shots ahead of Long Beach State, while recording the most pars (160) and the second-most birdies (28).
Ly, a graduate of Clovis High, carded a 73 on the final day of competition to finish at 7-over (77-73-73--223) and in a tie with Monica Villarreal of Long Beach State. Ly recorded a team-high seven birdies.
Senior Louisa Lies shot 2-under on the back nine to finish the round at even-par, 72, tying the lowest score on the day. Overall, Lies (75-78-72--225) ended in a tie for seventh with a 9-over.
Sophomore Hillary Billingsley (75-75-79--229, +13) tied for 13th while Krysta Clark (75-82-79--236, +20) and Christine Uhalde (77-79-80--236, +20) both tied for 28th.
Long Beach State (298-299-303--900) took home the team title at 36-over, 10 strokes ahead of the `Dogs, and Rochelle Chan (66-76-78--220) won the individual title with a 4-over.
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 8-9 at the Cowgirl Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif.
