Battles Named WAC Athlete of the Week

FRESNO, Calif. - After placing second at the Chase Race in Reno, the Western Athletic Conference named Eric Battles the Men's Cross Country Verizon Athlete of the Week Tuesday for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4. It was the first WAC Athlete of the Week honor given for the 2011 season.
Battles, a senior, ran a 19:54 in the 6K, leading the men's team to a second place finish over Nevada and UC Riverside. He placed second individually as well finishing just three seconds behind the lead runner. The race was Battles' first since concluding his season in the 2010 NCAA Regional race.
Battles recently earned his second Academic All-WAC Award as a junior along with three other Bulldogs.
San Jose State's Aylin Mejia won the award for the women.
Other men nominees included: Markus Geiger, Idaho; Jonah Ruybalid, New Mexico State; and Brian McKenna, Utah State.
