Spring Season in Full Swing in Paradise

FRESNO, Calif. - In its first tournament of the spring season, the Fresno State men's golf team sits in 11th place out of 18 teams after the first of three days of competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The tournament, held at the 7,218 yard, par-72 Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort, is hosted by the University of Hawai'i.
The Bulldogs shot a 4-over, 292, a one-shot improvement on their first round performance in this tournament last year, and are two strokes ahead of No. 36 Arizona."Considering it's the first round of the year, I am pleased with the performance," head coach Mike Watney said. "The team played a lot of good golf today."
The 'Dogs are lead by senior Brian Sunker who shot a 1-under, 71 and is currently tied for 22nd place. Sunker knocked in four birdies on the back nine, including one on the 577-yard, par-5 18th hole.
"It's really great to see Brian have a good round," Watney remarked. "It was a very solid performance for him today."
Nate Jessup, who fired an eagle on the 18th, and Rufie Fessler both shot a 1-over, 73 to sit in a tie for 44th. Keenan Nelson is two strokes behind them at 3-over and in 63rd with Jack Mulroy in a tie for 80th at 6-over.
No. 11 Cal has the early lead at 18-under with No. 25 New Mexico only four shots back. Julian Suri of Duke holds a one-stroke advantage with a 7-under, 65.
The Bulldogs return to action Thursday to compete in the second round of the John A. Burns Invitational with tee times starting at 11:10 a.m. PT for the 'Dogs.
