FRESNO, Calif. - In their first tournament of the spring season, both Christine Uhalde and the Bulldogs as a team are off to a strong start at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Uhalde fired the lowest round of her career with a 1-under, 70 to sit in first place after the opening round held at the 6,092-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
"Christine played fantastic today," head coach Angie Cates-Moore said. "Her ball striking has been very consistent and her short game has improved which has resulted in very positive results."Uhalde, a sophomore from Modesto, Calif., fired back-to-back birdies on her second and third holes and scattered two more throughout the round to put her as the only player to shoot under-par. She is one stroke ahead of both Emily Childs of Cal and Sally Watson of Stanford.
The Bulldogs will enter the final day of competition in second out of 12 teams after recording a 17-over, 301 during the first round. The 'Dogs are only six shots behind No. 23 Cal (295, +11) and hold a two shot lead over tournament host Stanford (303, +19).
"I'm very proud of the team because we got off to a bit of a rough start," Cates-Moore remarked. "They definitely hung in there and finished strong."
Three other 'Dogs sit in the top 30 with freshman Madchen Ly tied for 17th at 5-over, 76, junior Shaylee Yano right behind at 6-over, 77 and in a tie for 24th and senior Louisa Lies tied for 27th at 7-over, 78. Ly, Yano and Lies all recorded two birdies on the day.
Sophomores Taylor Wilkinson (85, +14), who competed as an individual, and Krysta Clark (86, +15) are in 60th and 63rd place, respectively.
The 'Dogs will be in the final pairing for the last round of Peg Barnard Invitational with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. PT.
"Being in the final pairing with some really good teams will be fun for us." Cates-Moore concluded. "It is a position we want to be in for the rest of the season. We will go out there and have some fun."
