'Dogs Battled but Dropped Into 10th

FRESNO, Calif. - Locked in a back-and-forth battle between seven of the 14 teams at the North Ranch Intercollegiate, Fresno State finished the tournament in 10th place, only eight strokes separating them from fourth place. The Bulldogs shot a final round 303, +23 to end at 67-over at the 6,728-yard, par-70 North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
"It was exciting going back and forth," head coach Mike Watney said. "Unfortunately, when it was all said and done we were in 10th."Sophomore Nate Jessup fired a final round 2-over, 72, which included 13-straight holes of par or better, to lead the 'Dogs on the day. He moved up six places to finish in a tie for 28th place at 16-over (76-78-72--226).
Brian Sunker paced the Bulldogs with a 15-over (73-76-76-225), after shooting a 6-over, 76 on the day. Sunker totaled 10 birdies over the two days to tie for the second most amongst the field.
Rufie Fessler tied for the second best par 5 scoring at 5-under, 4.17 and finished in a tie for 34th at 18-over (76-75-77--228). Juniors Johnny Partridge (72-79-78--229, +19) and Jack Mulroy (75-79-83--237, +27) concluded the tournament in 37th and 56th, respectively.
San Diego State took home the team title for the second year in a row with a 24-over, five shots ahead of in-town rival San Diego. Matt Hoffenberg (66-73-73--212, +2) of SDSU claimed the individual title by outlasting teammate Alex Kang (67-72-75--214, +4).
The Bulldogs will host the Fresno State Lexus Classic next Monday and Tuesday, March 5-6, at Fort Washington Country Club and it is open to the public.
"We are getting ready for the Lexus Classic and we are excited to play on our home course," Watney concluded.
