RENO, Nev. - The Fresno State softball team opened up WAC play with a 3-0 win over Nevada on Friday at Hixson Park.
Senior pitcher Michelle Moses threw her seventh shutout of the season to help the Bulldogs improve to 20-12 overall on the year.
"I think Michelle did a really great job of pitching and our six, seven, eight and nine batters came through for us today," head coach Margie Wright said.
Fresno State had five hits in the game and four of them came from the bottom of the Bulldogs' lineup. Of the five hits, three of them went for extra-bases as the `Dogs hit two doubles and one triple in the game.
Moses scattered six hits and finished with 10 strikeouts against two walks. It was her 16th career outing with 10 or more strikeouts.
Nevada had three doubles off Moses, but the senior worked around the doubles to keep the Wolf Pack off the scoreboard.
"I think that's the mark of a really good pitcher," Wright said of Moses not letting Nevada capitalize when it had runners in scoring position. "I think that's a really good testament to her."
Maria Sio, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and one run scored, started the scoring in the second inning with a two-out double that scored Andrea Ortega. Brooke Ortiz followed Sio with a single to bring her home and give the `Dogs a 2-0 lead.
Fresno State's third run came in the fourth inning when Ortega, who got on with her second triple of the season, scored on Michelle Solomon's infield grounder.
That was all the run support Moses needed, as the Bulldogs shut out their opponent for the ninth time this season.
