FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 57 Fresno State women's tennis team beat UCSB in a 7-0 decision on Friday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (9-6, 2-0 WAC) clinched the doubles point over the Gauchos (7-10) to gain a 1-0 lead going into singles. At No. 3 doubles, Bianca Modoc and Aishwarya Agrawal bested UCSB's April Scatliffe and Kiersten Meehan, 8-3. The `Dogs clinched the doubles point at No. 1 doubles where Marianne Jodoin and Tanya Murtagh bested Natalia Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf, 8-2.
In singles, the `Dogs clinched the team win quickly. Freshman Agrawal finished her match with lightening speed in a, 6-2, 6-3, defeat over Lozano at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Murtagh then bested Cano, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6. Senior Laura Pola clinched the Bulldog win at the No. 5 spot with her, 6-3, 7-5, defeat of Dockendorf.
The Bulldogs continued strong with a win at No. 4 singles from Modoc over Meehan, 7-5, 6-3. Olga Kirpicheva followed suit at No. 5 with her 6-4, 6-4, defeat over April Scatliffe. In the closest match of the day, 47th-ranked singles player Jodoin bested UCSB's Novak, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, to finish the match at the No. 1 spot.
The Bulldogs return to courts Sunday morning to face-off against Nevada at 11 a.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
