`Dogs Earn a Pair of Wins in Doubleheader

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team finished its action-packed weekend at home with a pair of wins in a doubleheader against No. 69 CSU Northridge at 11 a.m. and No. 51 Santa Clara at 5 p.m. The `Dogs beat CSUN, 6-1, and Santa Clara, 4-3.
The `Dogs started the day off strong by sweeping the CSU Northridge doubles teams on all three courts. Juniors Bianca Modoc and Melissa McQueen bested CSUN's Anna Yang and Nigora Sirojiddinova, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Senior Laura Pola and Aishwarya Agrawal were next to defeat their opponents at the No. 3 spot. The duo beat Maria Pistalu and Lorraine Cheung, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point early for the Bulldogs. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Marianne Jodoin and junior Olga Kirpicheva defeated Jen Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing, 8-3.
In singles, the Bulldogs continued to dominate against the Matadors despite the spring-like sun beating on their backs. Agrawal earned the first Bulldog victory quickly at the No. 3 spot with her victory over Man-Son-Hing, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Tanya Murtagh earned the second win for the team shortly after beating Chueng, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6. The Matadors answered back at No. 4 singles when Pistalu defeated McQueen, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Pola clinched the win for the `Dogs at No. 5 singles with her victory over Yang, 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-2. At the No. 1 spot Jodoin came from behind to defeat Sher, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-0. The morning ended in a marathon match at No. 2 singles where Kirpicheva edged Sirojiddinova in a close match, 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-5.
The Bulldogs returned to the courts at 5 p.m. to face off against the Santa Clara Broncos where they picked up another clean sweep in doubles play.
Pola and Agrawal were the first to conquer their opponent this time with a win over Kelly Lamble and Nicolette Wolny, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Jodoin and partner Murtagh defeated Katie Le and Jessica Agra, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs. At No. 2, McQueen and Modoc bested Alex Zaniewski and Kacie Wagner in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3).
In singles, the Broncos and Bulldogs went head-to-head. Murtagh started off for the Bulldogs by defeating Brittany Warly, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. The Broncos answered back at No. 2 where Lamble bested Agrawal, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 5 singles Modoc bested Agra, 6-3, 7-6(2), to bring the `Dogs one point away from beating Santa Clara.
The Broncos' 48th-ranked Le would not let her team leave without a fight as she beat No. 42 Jodoin, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot. At No. 4 singles, McQueen made her second dramatic comeback of the weekend over SCU's Wagner in a close match, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(5), to clinch the win for the Bulldogs. Shortly after the match ended with the Broncos' Zaniewski defeating Kirpicheva, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3.
"I was really happy with this weekend," Head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "It felt great to beat three ranked opponents and the team worked especially hard during today's doubleheader."
