FRESNO, Calif. - The weather during the final round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic, which included scattered showers and high winds, was a factor Tuesday as the men's golf team finished their home tournament in 12th place (363-367-400--1130, +50).
"The wind gauge at the course showed the gusts were up to 35 miles per hour," head coach Mike Watney said. "That's why the scores were through the roof."With most scores being in the 350's and 360's Monday, it was evident the weather played a role over the final round because the lowest score was a 376 shot by Washington State.
It was just a matter of who could brave the conditions and in the end Oregon State was able to hold on to claim the title at 7-over after shooting 20-over on the day. This was their first time winning the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
No. 28 Alex Ching of San Diego was able to climb up from fourth place to take home the individual title by shooting a 3-under on the day and a 7-under overall. He was only one of two competitors to fire an under-par round Tuesday with Justin Keiley of BYU being the other at 1-under.
Out of the Bulldogs, Johnny Partridge ended the tournament tied for 41st at 8-over and right behind was both Rufie Fessler and Macgregor Hoobery at 9-over, tied for 47th. Rounding out the 'Dogs were Nate Jessup at 12-over (T61), Brian Sunker with a 19-over (T77) and Keenan Nelson at 22-over (T86).
The top 'Dog of the tournament was Jack Mulroy who competed as an individual. He finished in a tie for 37th at 7-over.
"With all these guys I see good moments that have me excited for the future," Watney said. "It was also good to see former Bulldogs back in town coaching their teams."
Coach Watney was referring to former All-Americans Tim Norris and David Sutherland who coach at Kansas State and Sacramento State, respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action March 12-13 to compete in the Calloway Farms Invitational at The Farms in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
