FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Michelle Moses threw her eighth shutout of the season and the Fresno State softball team rebounded from a pair of tough losses to UNLV two days ago to take Friday's series opener from Utah State 4-0 at Bulldog Diamond.
The Bulldogs improve to 5-1 in WAC play and 25-15 overall on the year with the win that was their 16th-straight over the Aggies. Utah State falls to 11-23 and 2-5 in the league and the two teams return to the field Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
"I think we did a good job bouncing back tonight," head coach Margie Wright said. "You just have to let it go. Every game is a different game, so you have a different game plan for every game."
Moses allowed just three hits Friday and struck out five as she improved her record to 15-10 on the year. Her shutout was her second in WAC play, the first coming on March 23 at Nevada in Fresno State's first conference game of the season.
Offensively, the Bulldogs gave Moses the run support she needed and they got it early. The 'Dogs finished with seven hits in the game and each of the first five batters in the order had a hit. Fresno State's three, four and five batters all drove in a run Friday.
Moses started it in the first when she helped herself with a RBI double to the gap in left-center that scored Brooke Ortiz from first and gave the `Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Ortiz would score again in the third when the `Dogs put up three more runs to go up 4-0.
Designated player Courtney Moore and first baseman Stesha Brazil had back-to-back RBI singles in the third - Moore's to center that scored Ortiz and Brazil's to right that plated Moses.
Senior Andrea Ortega capped off the three-run inning with a two-out single to right that scored Moore.
After that, Moses kept the Aggies from mounting any rally and only gave up two hits from the fourth through seventh innings.
