FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team completed its series sweep of Utah State on Saturday by winning both games of the doubleheader, 8-0 in the five-inning first game and 5-2 in game two on a sunny afternoon at Bulldog Diamond.
The Bulldogs have now won 18-straight over Utah State (11-25, 2-7 WAC) and Fresno State improves to 27-15 overall and 7-1 in WAC play.
"We had some pretty timely hits, but I think some kids came through and we really needed it," head coach Margie Wright said of her team producing 13 runs off 14 in the two games. "I think all-in-all, we are playing pretty well right now after Wednesday [when the `Dogs lost two to UNLV]."
Senior Michelle Moses pitched both games for the Bulldogs Saturday and was the winning pitcher in all three games of the series. She gave up just one hit in game one when she threw her second-straight shutout and came back in game two to earn her 17th victory of the season in her 21 complete game in 2012.
"I think she was pretty good yesterday and today," Wright said of Moses' domination in the circle. "Michelle wants to win and that's it. That team [Utah State] was leading the WAC hitting-wise, so I think she did a really good job shutting them down."
For the series, Moses only allowed 10 hits and two runs in 19.0 innings of work with 11 strikeouts against five walks.
Fresno State did all its damage of game one during the second inning, scoring eight runs on six hits in the frame. That is the highest run total the Bulldogs have scored in an inning all season.
Six different Bulldogs drove in a run during the monster second and Brooke Ortiz highlighted it with her two-run triple to the wall down the right-field line.
In game two, Fresno State scored one run in the first, two in the third and two in the fifth. All five runs came were driven in by different players and freshman Brenna Moss led the team by going 2-for-4 with a RBI single in the fifth.
Moses' scoreless series was broken up in the sixth inning of game two when Kelley Kaneshiro hit a two-out, two-run homer to center off her.
Stesha Brazil led the team in the series against Utah State by going 5-for-10 with a double, one run scored and two RBIs.
The Bulldogs conclude their nine-game homestand on Monday when they host Cal Poly for a single game beginning at 5 p.m.
