FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team lost a heartbreaking 4-3, 10-inning game to Cal Poly Monday night at Bulldog Diamond.
In a late developing but an exciting game that went back-and-forth, Mustang shortstop Kim Westlund's two-out bloop single in the top of the 10th brought home Cami Brown for the winning run.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Mustangs (9-25) got on the board first with one unearned run.
Fresno State's Stesha Brazil got that run back immediately for the `Dogs (27-16) in the bottom of the sixth, as she led off the inning with a solo home run off the left-field foul pole. It was her fifth homer of the season.
That sparked a Bulldog rally, and freshman Kelly Megee gave Fresno State a 3-1 lead with her pinch-hit, two-run single to left field. Her clutch hit was the first of her career, as she entered the game 0-for-4 on the season.
The lead would not last, however, as Mariah Cochiolo smacked a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
That's where Westlund came through with the game-winning hit.
Maria Sio doubled to the wall in center field in the bottom of the 10th, but Cal Poly pitcher Jordan Yates retired the next two Bulldogs to complete her 10-inning victory.
Michelle Moses drew the tough loss in a gutsy effort for the senior. After throwing all three games in the series sweep over Utah State last weekend, Moses came back and threw another solid game Monday.
She only allowed eight hits in the 10 innings and struck out five with two walks. She fell to 17-11 on the year with the loss.
Fresno State returns to WAC action this coming weekend when it travels to San Jose State for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
