FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team jumped on Louisiana Tech with four runs through two innings and that carried the `Dogs to a 4-0 win in Friday's series opener at Bulldog Diamond.
This was the 14th game of the season that the Bulldogs shutout their opponent and it was the 12th shutout thrown by senior Michelle Moses. She leads the WAC and is tied for sixth nationally this year in shutouts.
Fresno State (32-20, 12-5) used a two-out rally to score three runs in the first and received a RBI single from Moses in the second to jump out to the 4-0 lead.
"I liked how we jumped on them early," head coach Margie Wright said. "We left a few people on-base that we needed to get in. That's something for us to work on for tomorrow."
After the first two batters in the first inning got out, a single from Moses, a walk by Courtney Moore and an error on La Tech shortstop Melanie Goff loaded the bases up for the `Dogs.
Vonnie Martin drew a seven-pitch walk to bring home one run before Andrea Ortega came through with a two-run single to right.
"That was huge," Wright said of Ortega's two-out, two-run single. "She has wanted to hit these runs in for a while and finally she was clutch and came through. She's got that in her and we need her to keep going."
After her RBI single in the second, Moses, who was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, kept the La Tech hitters off balance.
"She kept moving the ball around on them and did a nice job executing the pitches," Wright said. "Every pitcher strives for perfection and I know that's what she wants to do. As long as you are doing that, you can win ball games that way."
Moses (20-13, 1.91 ERA) finished the game with six strikeouts against one walk and scattered four hits.
She improved to a perfect 8-0 in WAC home games this year and helped the Bulldogs remain undefeated in conference home games (9-0).
Fresno State closes out the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will honor the 2012 senior class before the start of game one.
