MALIBU, Calif. --- The Fresno State soccer team fell to Pepperdine 3-1 Sunday afternoon on Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif.
"Pepperdine was a very good team, we knew that we needed to be sharp playing them on their home field," said Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka. "I felt that we certainly matched the intensity of them as a team and that we had really, really bright moments where we settled the game down and started to play."
The Bulldogs (3-5-1) put up a fight against Pepperdine though were unable to hold off the Waves' 33 shots.
Pepperdine jumped on the board first in the 24th minute with a one on one goal by junior Ally Holtz. Fresno State rallied right back with a goal from senior Kayla Kret just 65 seconds later. Kret scored the tying goal off an assists from Dani Rodrigues.
"We were really excited about answering again after we got scored on," added Zwaschka. "It shows a really good response of the team about the idea that we know that we are never out."
Holtz scored again for the Waves in the 37th minute to regain a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
The Bulldogs came close to scoring in the second half before Pepperdine put away its third goal of the game in the 82nd to secure the 3-1 win.
Junior goalkeeper Katie DeVault finished the day with 12 saves, just one save off of the Fresno State all-time single match save record of 13 that DeVault set against Santa Clara in 2012.
"We fought right to the very end with the idea that we are never out of it," said Zwaschka. "I think that is the most important thing for us to draw from going into conference play next week against two of the top teams in our conference."
The Bulldogs open up Mountain West play next weekend at San Diego State on Friday Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
