FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State swimming and diving pushed UC Davis, the defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champions, to the end before falling 172-128 in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at the Aquatics Center.
"I was really proud of the girls and how they raced so well today," Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "That was such a great rebound from the Nevada meet so I'm very happy."
The `Dogs got off to a great start with a win in the 200 Yard Medley relay. Esme Gullick, Brooke Rodriguez, Tarryn Rennie and Leah Hatayama teamed to swim a 1:47.40 and take 11 points. Hatayama closed the race with the fastest 50-yard swim in the field by almost a whole second.
Hatayama followed up her strong opening performance with season-best times in the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle. She swam a 23.75-second 50 to win and then, two events later, finished the 100 in 52.36 for her second individual win. Hatayama's 23.75 in the 50 was good for the third-best time in Fresno State school history. The junior from Fresno scored the max amount of points possible with a total of 18 in those two races.
Hailee Baldwin registered Fresno State's other individual event win. The sophomore out of Turlock won the 200 Breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:20.99. Her time is the fourth-best time in the Mountain West Conference this season.
Sophomore Esme Gullick finished runner-up in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke. She swam season-best times of 57.48 in the 100 and 2:05.57 in the 200. Both of those times put her in the Top Ten in the conference this season.
Shelbie Holden won the 3-meter dive with a score of 265.73. It was the second win this season for the sophomore from Carmichael, Calif. Lacie Ruth finished third with a score of 232.58.
The `Dogs send their divers down to the USC Invitational this coming weekend. The full team closes out the four-meet homestand to open the year on Saturday, November 15 when they take on Fresno Pacific and UC Santa Cruz in a Tri Meet at the Aquatics Center.
