Fox Leads `Dogs Past San Diego, 93-88

Aside from the Fox, three other 'Dogs were in double figures as senior guard Alex Furr totaled 15 points and fellow senior Robin Draper added 13. Redshirt freshman Bego Faz Davalos also chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. San Diego was led by center Sophia Ederaine, who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds to go with four blocks.
The Toreros shot out the gates, racing out to an 8-2 lead, forcing White to call a timeout and regroup. The break worked as the Bulldogs fought back to level the game at 17-17 with 11:56 as they began hitting from outside, knocking down three triples in less than three minutes.
After the under-12 media timeout, the 'Dogs grabbed the lead with a 7-3 run in less than two minutes after Furr dropped a step-back 3-pointer from the top of the key as Fresno State took a 24-20 advantage. The Toreros picked up four straight to tie the game, but the Bulldogs responded with an 8-3 spurt to grab a 32-27 lead.
With 2:18 left in the half, Malina Hood Sank a triple to bring the Toreros within two, but Draper quickly answered with one of her own to push the lead back to five. The senior added a pair of foul shots, but San Diego made five points late to make it a 41-39 game at the half.
The two sides continued to play neck-and-neck through the early going in the second half, but after junior center Toni Smith had a lay-up with 14:18 to give the Bulldogs a 53-49 lead, the Toreros mounted a charge. Five points apiece from Malina Hood and Ederaine fueled a 12-0 run by San Diego as they jumped out to an eight-point lead with less than 11 minutes to go.
Fresno State ended the drought though as Faz Davalos converted on an and-one. On the following possession, Furr forced a turnover and found Draper in transition for a spot-up 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two.
A jumper from USD's Maya Hood with 8:06 on the clock pushed the home team's lead to five, but from then on the Bulldogs began to push the pace. Furr finished off an and-one with 7:23 on the clock to tie the game up at 65-65. With the Toreros clinging to a 69-68 lead, Fresno State's pressure began to pay off. Trailing by two with 6:36 remaining, the Bulldogs went on a 14-1 stretch as they the pressure on defense turned into the team attacking the basket on offense, scoring off layups and from the foul line.
Despite a 3-pointer from Mailna Hood, a layup from Faz Davalos and a pair from the line from Furr, kept the double-digit lead in tact as the advantage went up to 12, Fresno State's largest lead of the night with 2:23. The Toreros didn't give up though, cutting the deficit to 85-80 with 47 seconds remaining.
With the game still in question, Fox was fouled and stepped to the line to hit two crucial free throws. After an and-one by Ederaine for USD, Furr followed Fox's lead and sank both of her shots from the line. With the 'Dogs leading by four with 22 seconds, Fox was back at the line where the senior calmly sank her ninth and 10th free throws of the game.
San Diego wasn't done though as Aubrey Ward-El made it a three-point game with seven seconds with a 3-pointer. Forward Alex Sheedy was quickly fouled on the inbounds pass. Despite a 2-of-11 night from the field, the senior toed the line and iced the game as she gave Fresno State a 93-88 lead.
The Bulldogs shot a staggering 58 percent (29-of-50) from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. Despite being decidedly out-rebounded in the first half, Fresno State held a 14-13 edge on the glass in the second half.
The Bulldogs will be finish off their three-game road stretch on Sunday as they head to Bakersfield. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at the Icardo Center.

The point total was the most for an individual Bulldog since Bree Farley scored 31 on March 7, 2014.
