BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After picking up a big road win at San Diego on Friday night, Fresno State fell to 3-2 on the season after losing 80-60 at Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center as the squad was unable to replicate its offensive efficiency from two days earlier.
Senior forward Alex Sheedy led the Bulldogs with her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 points while senior guard Raven Fox added 10 points. Freshman Bego Faz Davalos just missed a double-double as she recorded nine points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks. The Roadrunners through had three players in double-figures as Brooklynn Hinkens led them with 19 on 6-of-10 shooting from three, and Tyonna Outland and Dajy Vines had 18 apiece.
Hinkins hit 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first three minutes of the game to give the Roadrunners a quick 9-4 run to start the contest. Bakersfield then added four more to give themselves a 13-4 lead early in the game.
The Bulldogs rallied with a 7-0 spurt that ended with a pair of steals and fast-break layups to pull within two, but Vines responded with a triple at the other end to push it back to 15-11 in favor of the Roadrunners.
A steal and run-out by Fox gave the 'Dogs their first lead of the half at 20-18 with 11:58 on the clock. Fox then picked up her second foul with 8:47 on the clock and had to head to the bench.
After Fresno State took the two-point lead, they went ice cold, going just over eight minutes without a point as the Roadrunners ran off a 20-0 run as they pushed the pace at will, before senior guard Stephanie Rovetti finally ended the drought, hitting one-of-two from the foul line with just under four minutes to go.
Despite playing relatively even throughout the rest of the half, Fresno State trailed 50-36 at the break due to the Roadrunners' hot shooting from 3 as they hit 10-15 (66.7 percent), including 6-of-6 from Hankins as she led Bakersfield with 18 points.
With 18:54 on the clock in the second half, Head Coach Jaime White received a technical foul. Outland sank both free throws and Vines followed with a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it a 58-34 contest, Fresno State's largest deficit of the season. As Sheedy was dribbling up court on the ensuing possession, Vines went down as she was back-peddling and left the game with an apparent right knee injury.
Despite the loss, the Roadrunners continued to keep their lead hovering around 20 points throughout the remainder of the half. At times, it appeared as though the momentum could shift, but Fresno State was unable to get closer than 17 points as Bakersfield ended the game with an 80-60 win.
Despite winning the rebounding battle for the first time this season (45-32), the 'Dogs had 29 turnovers which Bakersfield turned into 38 points to hold a distinct 16-point advantage in the category. The Roadrunners also shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field compared to Fresno State which was at 33.9 percent (19-of-56).
The Bulldogs will take the next three days to regroup before heading back home to face UC Riverside on Dec. 4. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., PT, and will broadcast on the Mountain West Network. Christian Lukens will be on the call for ESPN2 790AM.
