COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Fresno State junior guard Marvelle Harris has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for his efforts leading the Bulldogs' men's basketball team to wins over two previously unbeaten teams in league play - Utah State and Nevada. This is Harris' second career MW weekly honor.
Harris averaged 29.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record on the week and moved up into a tie for second place in the conference standings - a single game back of MW leader Wyoming.
Harris scored a career-high 40 points in the road win at Nevada - the highest mark by any MW player this season - and tied for the third-best single-game scoring performance in the nation this season - while battling sickness throughout the day. He is one of just six players nationally to score at least 40 or more points in a game so far this season. His 40 points were three shy of tying the school record for most points in regulation (43) and five off the school record for most points in a game (45).
Harris is the seventh Bulldog to score 40 or more in a game and delivered the eighth such effort in program history. He shattered his previous career best of 30 points in last season's 98-97 overtime victory at UC Irvine.
Harris' 40 points in the win at Nevada came on a 14-of-23 shooting (61 percent), including a 5-for-8 clip on 3-pointers (62.5 percent) - tying his personal best of five 3-pointers. His 14 made field goals and 23 field goal attempts were both a personal best for his Fresno State career - spanning 86 games. Harris surged into the MW scoring lead with an average of 18.5 points per game for the season and 25.5 points per game in MW games.
Earlier in the week, Harris led Fresno State to a 61-52 win over Utah State with a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. He was 5-for-11 from the floor and two 3-pointers.
Harris has scored in double digits for 13 straight games and has done so in 14 of the last 15 games. He has also posted 10 career games with 25 or more points, including six this season - the most recent coming as 40 in the road win at Nevada this past Saturday.
The Bulldogs have won three straight games largely behind the scoring, defense and leadership of the team captain Harris. Next up for Fresno State is a road game at San Jose State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. PT before the 'Dogs return home Saturday to host Wyoming at 4 p.m. PT.
