FRESNO, Calif. - In preparation for the season opener at Stanford on Feb. 18, the Fresno State women's lacrosse team will host Occidental in an exhibition game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., at Bulldog Stadium.
"We are excited to have a home exhibition to start our 2015 spring season. Occidental has had a history of finishing strong in their conference and it will be nice to have a chance to play a home competitive match before opening up with Stanford. All the hard work that our team has put into preseason will get a chance to be tested before our first conference game," Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio said.
Led by Giglio, who enters her fourth year at Fresno State, the team returns 15 players from last season's squad, including three of its top point scorers. Junior Anjelica Fuccillo finished last season second in points on the team with 30 (22 G, 8 A) and will lead this year's attack along with senior Marcy Levatino, who had 25 points (19 G, 6 A). Sophomore Kyleigh Westgarth was fourth on the team, recording 10 points (8 G, 2 A) in her freshman season.
Westgarth was the team's top draw control specialist, who in her first year set a new single-season program record with 37. Also returning is sophomore Caroline Dineen-Carlson who was six back of her teammate with 31.
Along with Fuccillo and Levatino, Holly Cineros will complete the captain trio this season. The senior recorded a team-high 22 groundballs last year and is the Bulldogs' career leader in the category with 65.
Sophie Aragon, Fresno State's 2014 Player of the Year, will hold things down on the defensive side after starting all 15 games for the Bulldogs last year as a low defender. A leader across the field, Aragon finished second on the team with 21 groundballs.
With the graduation of goalie Lisa Barnaba, sophomore Meganne Weissenfels will move into the spot after playing in 10 of the team's 15 games in 2014.
