FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Director of Athletics Jim Bartko announced Friday facility enhancements that will benefit the Bulldog women's soccer and lacrosse programs.
Fresno State will be installing the same surface that many professional and top collegiate programs use and the locker rooms will receive state-of-the-art lockers designed specifically for each individual sport, new flooring, graphics and air conditioning systems.
"The playing field wasn't up to our standards and with University and donor support, we were able to upgrade our field to the best natural surface available," Bartko said. "We're also very pleased to have that same support to renovate the locker rooms and enhance the experience those student-athletes will have in their time as Bulldogs."
The field upgrade to the soccer and lacrosse stadium will begin on Monday, Feb. 2 while the locker room renovation for both programs will take place early this summer and be ready for the 2015-16 academic year.
"Having a donor step up to create the best possible locker room for our team is a tremendous gift and to be able to upgrade the playing surface will be a big improvement to our program as well," head soccer coach Brian Zwaschka said.
Fresno State is installing Tiffway II Hybrid Bermuda Sod, a one and one-quarter inch thick Super Bowl cut over-seeded with rye grass. The project is expected to be completed by Feb. 16 and the Bulldog lacrosse team will play their home opener on March 4 against Campbell on the new surface.
"We are excited to play our first home game of the season on the new surface being installed," head lacrosse coach Jessica Giglio said. "We are grateful to the University, Athletic Department and our donor who stepped up to make that and our locker room enhancement a possibility."
Fresno State unveiled its soccer and lacrosse stadium on Oct. 31, 2014 on senior night for the women's soccer team. The stadium is Fresno State's most recent major facility addition. It is located on the Southwest corner of Cedar and Barstow Avenues behind Pete Beiden Field and sits on the east side of Bulldog Stadium.
The total cost for the locker room and field replacement is approximately $800,000, being paid for with a combination of philanthropic and University support.
