FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis (2-2) team picked up a pair of dual wins on Saturday, defeating Cal Poly 5-2 and Fresno City College 7-0 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
It's great to be playing at home. We took care of two matches in one day and achieved two victories. We do have things to work on in order to get prepared for two very tough teams at home next weekend. We look forward to the challenge and having our great fans behind us as we defend our home courts," head coach Ryan Stotland said.
In the opening dual match of the day, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point after Maiar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed grabbed a 6-1 win over Emily Gibbens and Dane Joubert and Anneka Watts and Sophie Watts won the deciding match Zoe Oedekerk and Hannah Stone 6-2.
It did not take long for the 'Dogs to capture the win as they put together quick straight-set victories at the top of their lineup. Freshman Maiar Sherif Ahmed was the first to close out her singles match, finishing off Hannah Stone, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, just before No. 47 junior Sophie Watts knocked off Louise Oxnevad 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Junior Rana Ahmed Sherif clinched the dual match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Emily Gibbins.
Also picking up a win in the dual match was Anneka Watts at No. 5 against Dane Joubert. The junior 0-6 in the first set, but came back win the second, 6-2, before closing out the match 10-7.
In the second dual match of the day, the Bulldogs made quick work of Fresno City. The teams of the Sherif Ahmed sisters, Sophie Watts/Aishwarya Agrawal and Anneka Watts/Tanya Murtagh each won 8-0 in doubles competition.
Straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 wins from Maiar Sherif Ahmed, Murtagh and Anneka Watts secured the victory. Rana Sherif Ahmed followed suit with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3, Anne Susdorf with a 6-0, 6-1 score and No.6 and Sophie Watts with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 1 finished off the sweep.
The Bulldogs will be back at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Feb. 6 as they host San Francisco at 5 p.m., PT.
