SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team dropped its match 2-1 at San Diego State on Friday night at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Fresno State's lone shot on goal in the first half was in the 35th minute when sophomore Alissa Pham placed one in the back of the net to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead, her first goal in 2015. Sophomore Peyton Cline recorded her second assist of the season on the play.
"I was pleased with our resilience," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We answered a tough attack in the first 10 minutes by scoring. We managed a good game and really went after them."
Just seven minutes later, San Diego State freshman standout Leah Pruitt scored after receiving a pass from junior Jen Rupey, her fourth assist of the year. Through the first half, the Aztecs (10-4-0, 6-1-0 MW) outshot the Bulldogs 10-3.
"There were no surprises," Zwaschka said. "It was an even match against probably the best striker in the Conference in Pruitt."
Pruitt kicked in her seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Fresno State freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started her fifth-straight game and saved four goals, giving her a total of 40 on the season in nine games.
The loss snapped the Bulldogs' three-game winning streak after back-to-back shutouts last week over Colorado College and Air Force.
For the game, San Diego State outshot Fresno State 19-9 and owned a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. The Bulldogs were held to two corner kicks, while the Aztecs had eight.
Sophomore Myra Delgadillo led the 'Dogs with three shots, while Pham and sophomore Maria Gomez each had two.
Fresno State (4-9-1, 3-3-1 MW) is tied for fifth place in the Mountain West with four games left, while New Mexico is in fourth. The top six teams receive invites to the Mountain West Championships in November.
The Bulldogs dropped to 2-11 all-time against San Diego State and 0-7 when playing in San Diego. The last time Fresno State took a match from San Diego State was Oct. 27, 2000 (4-2).
Nine different Bulldogs have scored a goal this season.
