FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team dropped its match 2-0 to San Jose State after two late goals on Friday afternoon, eliminating the Bulldogs from Mountain West tournament contention.
The 'Dogs (5-12-1, 4-6-1 MW) gave up two goals in the final 10 minutes after a long defensive battle with the Spartans (10-7-2, 8-3-0 MW). Statistically, San Jose State owned advantages in shots (21-6), shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (7-4).
"We started out really well," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to convert opportunities to score. Late in the game, we had to try to push to get to the goal and in doing so we got stretched out and we gave them just the opening they needed to place one in the net."
Fresno State leading scorer Myra Delgadillo sustained an injury in the 25th minute that kept her out the rest of the game, a huge blow to the Bulldog offense.
"A lot changed when Myra [Delgadillo] left the game," Zwaschka added. "No team is the same when their leading scorer is on the bench."
Sophomore Peyton Cline, fourth on the team in shots (29) this season, was the only Bulldog to get off more than one shot in the game. Freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann recorded six saves throughout the match, bringing her season total to 51 in 13 games.
Throughout the season, Fresno State was led offensively by sophomores Myra Delgadillo (6 goals, 2 assists and 31 shots with 16 on goal) and Maria Gomez (2 goals, 1 assist and 44 shots with 15 on goal), junior Alyssa Holsworth (2 assists, 31 shots with 11 on goal) and Cline (1 goal, 2 assists and 29 shots with 5 on goal). Gomez, Holsworth and Cline each recorded shots on goal against San Jose State.
Defensively, the 2015 Bulldogs relied heavily on senior Fanny Johansson, juniors Angie Weiner and Amanda Nunes and sophomore Sara Jo Ciapponi. Nunes was unable to play the final two games of the season due to a foot injury.
"In the Mountain West, you have to get the details right, or your opponent is going to capitalize on your mistakes," Zwaschka said. "Even through this last weekend, we had a chance to get into the tournament, but we didn't quite get it done."
