MORAGA, Calif. - Led by redshirt sophomore Bego Faz Davalos' third double-double of the season, and a career-high 21 points, Fresno State left Moraga with a split for the weekend at the Hilton Concord Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, defeating Northeastern 69-55 on Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion.
Along with her 21 points, Faz Davalos added 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Senior Moriah Faulk also chipped in 13 points and six boards and fellow senior Shauqunna Collins recorded 12 points, five assists and a pair of steals.
The 'Dogs were able to jump out to an 11-point halftime lead after shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from 3, while holding Northeastern to just 29 percent from the field (9-of-31).
Early in the first quarter, just as the Huskies cut their deficit to two with 3:48 with a 3 by Taggert, the Bulldogs seized control of the quarter. The 'Dogs went on an 8-0 run over the final minutes just before Faulk banked a 3 from the left wing at the buzzer to give Fresno State a 20-7 lead.
With 5:38 to play in the second, Northeastern called a timeout after a 6-0 spurt by the 'Dogs that ended with a left-handed fast break layup by Brittany Aikens. The Huskies came out strong as Zoe Zwerling knocked down a triple to start a 9-0 run to make it a 29-21 game.
Aikens though ended the threat with a 3 from the left wing with 1:35 remaining in the half. The teams traded buckets to end the second quarter as the 'Dogs took a 36-25 lead into the break.
The third quarter is when Faz Davalos took over, scoring 10 of her 21 during a less than seven-minute stretch. With the Bulldogs holding a 12-point advantage, the center scored the team's next eight points, three of which came from Collins.
Midway through the fourth quarter on back-to-back possessions, Faz Davalos scored her 21st point and collected her 10th rebound of the game.
As a big piece to Fresno State's inside game, Faz Davalos helped the Bulldogs to a 38-18 advantage in the paint and a 45-38 edge on the glass. Despite three Huskies reaching double figures in scoring, the Bulldogs held Northeastern to just 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field.
Fresno State will return home to face CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., at the Save Mart Center.
