EUGENE, Ore. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team rallied from a big deficit, but the Bulldogs' valiant comeback bid came up short in a 78-73 road loss to the No. 15/16 Oregon Ducks on Monday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.
"There are no moral victories," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We had to make some explosive plays at the rim because of Oregon's shot-blocking ability. I thought our guys attacked the basket much better in the second half. We didn't take care of the basketball - a lot of those were on us without taking anything away from what Oregon did (defensively). I am proud of the way we fought back, which put us in a position where we had a chance to win the game."
Fresno State (5-1) got a team-best 18 points - all in the second half - from senior guard Marvelle Harris, while Paul Watson added 11. Junior forward Torren Jones recorded fourth double-double this season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Dillon Brooks led the way for the Ducks with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Boucher and Elgin Cook added 14 points each for the Oregon (6-0), who led 70-52 with 6:35 to play before Harris scored 13 points in a 16-2 run by the Bulldogs that cut the deficit to four.
A driving layup by Brooks put Oregon up 74-68 with 1:20 left, and the Ducks held on by making four of six free throws in the final 45 seconds. Oregon had led by as many as 19 in the second half before Fresno State rallied back.
The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 41-32 behind Jones and Karachi Edo, who had nine rebounds and 10 points.
The Bulldogs will be back home on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT for "Staff and Faculty Appreciation Night." All Fresno State staff and faculty will get free admission to the game by showing their Fresno State ID at the Save Mart Center Box Office on gameday. Other tickets start at $10.
There is also a special $9 "Battle of the 99" ticket package for the Bulldogs' upcoming home games versus Pacific (Dec. 12) and Bakersfield (Dec. 16). The $9 ticket includes admission to both games.
''You like to think you're going to start most games better than we did tonight, but we fought some adversity,'' Fresno State coach Rodney Terry said. ''We let our offense affect our defense in the first seven minutes of the game.''
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
"Be Bold!" --- A limited number of $99 9-Game plans, which includes any nine of Fresno State's remaining 14-home games, are still available by calling 559-278-DOGS.
