FRESNO, Calif. - A 3-pointer from San Diego 31 seconds remaining proved to be the deciding play of the afternoon as Fresno State dropped a hard-fought 72-68 defeat on Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
With the game knotted at 66-66 with 73 second remaining, the Toreros' Malina Hood sank a 3-pointer from the left side of the court in the final minute and hit a pair of critical free throws down the stretch to give the 'Dogs their third loss of the season by five points or less.
The Bulldogs (4-6) were led by a trio of scorers in double figures as senior guard Shauqunna Collins led the way with a season-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and added five rebounds and five assists. After notching the first triple-double in school history on Tuesday in a win over Cal State Stanislaus, redshirt sophomore center Bego Faz Davalos filled up the box score chipping in 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Senior guard Alex Furr added 12 points.
San Diego (9-1) was led in scoring by Hood who tied her career-high with 28 points, finishing the game 10-of-15 from the field, and hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Two other Toreros finished in double figures as her sister Maya Hood added 14 points and six rebounds and Sydney Williams chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Toreros jumped out to a 15-5 lead after the first five minutes of play. The Bulldogs faced a 10-point deficit heading into the second quarter, down 21-11, but they kept pace with San Diego as the teams split the next 14 points as San Diego held a 28-18 lead with 4:48 to play in the half. Finding another notch on defense, the 'Dogs ended the quarter on a 12-2 run getting five field goals from four different players and holding San Diego to one field goal while forcing three turnovers.
With the Bulldogs continuing their hot play from the field in the second half, they raced out to their largest lead of the afternoon taking a 52-42 lead on a 3-pointer from the left corner from Moriah Faulk and kept a five-point lead heading into the final frame.
With a perfect 4-0 mark on the season after leading after three quarters, the Bulldogs continued to build its lead increasing it to 56-49 with eight minutes left on a Collins layup. San Diego refused to go away quietly putting together a 12-4 run over the next 3:41 to take its first lead since the early minutes of the third quarter.
After a Faz Davalos layup put the 'Dogs up by a pair (63-61), San Diego scored the next five points to take a three-point lead before Furr knocked down a crucial 3-pointer to tie the game at 66 with 1:13 remaining.
Fresno State shot a season-best 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from 3-point range. San Diego countered shooting 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field and tied a season-high for a Bulldog opponent with nine 3-pointers. Each team grabbed 27 rebounds, and the 'Dogs edged the Toreros 36-22 in points in the paint.
The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday at Pac-12 foe Utah at 2 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season.
