Fresno State Blanks Santa Clara on the Road

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team improved to 6-2 on the year with its sixth straight win on Saturday, defeating Santa Clara 7-0 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
"I'm very proud of the team today as we stayed focused and everyone took care of business. Winning our sixth straight is a difficult feat but we are going to come back home and aim for lucky number seven," head coach Ryan Stotland said.
Fresno State claimed the doubles point as sisters Maiar and Rana Sherif Ahmed won 8-4 over Chelby Cooke and Daniella Silva. Sofya Malysheva and Tanya Murtagh then finished off the point as they went into tiebreak to knock off Danielle Zinn and Riley Morgan, 8-7(4).
Maiar Sherif Ahmed remained undefeated in singles play in dual matches to start off singles competition, knocking off Nabila Farah 6-2, 6-0 in her second match of the weekend at No. 1. Murtagh then finished off Elaine Chesoni 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth flight. Rana Sherif Ahmed followed by clinching the dual with 6-1, 6-2 win over Daniella Silva.
The sweep was finished off by No. 43 Sophie Watts in the second flight, Sofya Malysheva and Anne Susdorf who each won in straight sets.
The Bulldogs return home to the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Feb. 21 to host Wichita State at 11 a.m., PT.
