TEMPE, Ariz. - The Fresno State softball team split its two games Saturday in the ASU Kajikawa Classic, falling 4-0 to Ole Miss in game one and defeating Cal State Northridge 3-2 in eight innings in the second game.
The win over CSUN ended a little before 1 a.m. local time and came off a run scored by Brenna Moss. Moss stole third base and a throwing error allowed her to come home for the winning run in extra innings.
Fresno State is now 3-1 on its opening weekend and plays one remaining game Sunday at 12 p.m. PT against the University of San Diego.
In game one the Bulldogs (2-1) were hurt by missed opportunities early, stranding five runners on base in the first two innings alone, and ended up being shut out by Rebel pitcher Emily Gaitan. Fresno State had just four hits in the game and Gaitan struck out five batters while earning the win in her first decision of the year.
Fresno State pitcher Jill Compton (1-1) drew the loss in what was a strong performance for her. She threw 6.1 innings, only allowed four hits and allowed four runs, three of which were earned. She struck out nine batters, which matched her season-high from 2014.
Despite the early missed opportunities at the plate, Compton kept the `Dogs in the game with her work in the circle. Through four innings she had allowed just one hit and had seven strikeouts. By the fifth, Compton had fanned nine Rebel batters as the game was scoreless.
Ole Miss got just its second hit of the game in the top of the sixth, and first leadoff batter on when Courtney Syrett singled to center. That sparked a Rebel rally, as a double by pinch-hitter Natalie Martinez scored one run and a sacrifice fly from Miranda Strother plated a second run to put Ole Miss up 2-0.
The Rebels would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh and the Bulldogs, who hadn't gotten a hit since the second-inning, went three-up and three-down in the seventh to conclude the game.
Hannah Harris drew the start in game two for the `Dogs in the circle and threw four scoreless innings. She exited the game with a 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly by Whitney Smith in the bottom of the fourth plated Michelle Solomon for the first run of the game by either team.
Fresno State added a second run in the bottom of the fifth when Moss scored on a wild pitch after she had tripled to left-center.
Cal State Northridge tied it up with two runs in the top of the sixth that were all scored with two outs.
In the top of the eighth, Compton allowed one single but recorded three outs on strikeouts to keep the game tied heading to the bottom of the eighth.
That's where Moss' speed won the game for the `Dogs.
