`Dogs Surge Past Rams on Day-Two

FORT COLLINS, Colo.- Bulldog softball remains undefeated after the second day of Mountain West conference action against Colorado State after edging the Rams 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
"We scratched another win across today." Head coach Trisha Ford said. "Hannah [Harris] did a solid job for us and Jill [Compton] came in to close. Colorado State is a scrappy team and that was a good win. Paige [Gumz] came through with a huge hit that was enough to pull out a W. We have been in a lot of tight games this year and you hope as a coach that it builds character and grit as the season goes on."
Fresno State grasped an early lead over Colorado State after leadoff batter Brenna Moss scored from third base on a ball to the right side from Kierra Willis.
Hannah Harris drew the start in the circle for the `Dogs and went the duration of five innings before Jill Compton made her second appearance of the weekend, giving up a lone hit in the seventh. The Bulldog pitching staff as a whole struck out six batters and allowed only one run. Harris moved to 6-2 on the season after recording the Saturday afternoon win over Colorado State.
The Rams had two hits in the bottom of the first inning and were held down by Harris who kept Colorado State scoreless after four complete innings. The Rams scored their first run of the series in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out double to right field.
Bulldog catcher Paige Gumz hit her second home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to put Fresno State up 3-0. In a span of two games, Fresno State had three over the fence shots to score eight of the `Dogs 12 runs.
Junior Bria Kennedy led the team offensively after reaching base on all three at-bats with two singles and a walk. The designated player has a weekend batting average of .800 after accumulating four hits in five at-bats against Colorado State.
Fresno State reached base 10 times in the seven inning game on Saturday compared to 17 in the first game against Colorado State on Friday afternoon.
A series of seven hits and three walks led the `Dogs to a 3-1 victory including six singles and one home run to give the team a total batting average of .333 over the two-game slate.
Previous Action
In what was the conference opener against Colorado State, Fresno State topped the Rams in a five inning run-rule victory on Friday night highlighted by a pair of home runs that scored six of the `Dogs nine runs.
Looking Ahead
Fresno State will return to Ram Stadium for the final game of the conference series to take on Colorado State for the third time on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (PT) before heading home. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, March 27 as they host San Jose State for the second weekend of Mountain West play.
