DENVER - Back on the road after a week off, the No. 34 Fresno State women's tennis knocked off its fifth ranked opponent of the season, defeating No. 55 Denver, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
The Bulldogs swept through doubles competition with a 6-2 win from the Watts twins at No. 2 and a pair of 6-3 victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
Three straight-set defeats put the dual match away for the `Dogs. Senior Anne Susedorf won 6-1, 6-3 on Court Six, No. 59-ranked junior Sophie Watts picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1, and freshman Maiar Sherif Ahmed finished things off at No. 2 with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win.
Back in the lineup for Fresno State, senior Aishwarya Agrawal also gutted out a pair of tiebreaks in both sets to defeat Charlotte Derbyshire 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) for the `Dogs fifth win of the day.
"A coach can truly be proud of his team when everyone shows tremendous fight no matter the circumstances, and that is exactly what the team did today," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We faced a good ranked team in tough conditions and the entire team battled and showed our resolve. We are excited to bring this fight to every practice and every match we play from here on out.
"If you want a great example of a team with a lot of fight, this is a great one to see."
Fresno State travels to the USAF Academy on Sunday to face Air Force. The dual match is set to begin at 10 a.m., PT.
