Final Inning Surge Leaves the `Dogs Trailing By Two

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State softball team fell 9-7 to San Jose State on the final day of the three-game conference series hosted at Margie Wright Diamond.
"We had some good at-bats in the last couple innings," head coach Trisha Ford said. "We executed when we needed to execute but we need to clean it up in the beginning of the game."
San Jose State consistently scored one run in the top of the first inning during the three-game conference series, Fresno State was left trailing by one after one complete inning.
Defensively, Brenna Moss had an assist from center field to pick a Spartan baserunner off of first, giving Fresno State some momentum moving into the bottom of the third inning.
Whitney Smith hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game 1-1. After recording the first hit of the game for the `Dogs, catcher Paige Gumz put Fresno State up 3-1 with a single to left field that scored both Moss and Kierra Willis.
Fresno State wasn't able to enjoy a two-run lead very long as the Spartans came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on a base hit to right field.
Hannah Harris made her second appearance of the weekend with two outs in the top of the fifth inning after San Jose State grasped a 7-3 lead with four runs on two hits. The Spartans put up one run in both the sixth and seventh inning to gain a five run lead at the bottom of the seventh.
A seventh inning battle by the `Dogs was highlighted by a double from Michelle Solomon to score one run followed by a triple from Willis to drive in two additional runs for Fresno State. A double play ended the game in favor of San Jose State with the `Dogs trailing by two runs.
Previous Action
A late game rally led the Fresno State softball team to a 3-2 extra-inning victory over San Jose State (24-12) on Saturday night at Margie Wright Diamond.
Looking Ahead
Fresno State will make its way to San Diego, Calif., for the third week of Mountain West play. The three-game series will begin on Thursday, April 2 against the Aztecs and last through Saturday, April 4.
